I'm impressed, Kirby. Was that all off the top of your head?
Yeah, part of my job involves doing network architecture design, specification and integration for Microsoft SQL server based networks in manufacturing facilities. The real-time manufacturing data we collect and analyze is auditable by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) so uptime, redundancy and data integrity are important to my work. My clients can face federal fines if they do not have these records.

At the moment I'm actually in Florida doing just this type of work for Florida's largest Super Market chain.

Sometimes I'm amazed that I get paid to do my work just because I enjoy my job - it's fun and I make it a priority to stay on top of my game, so I'm pretty good at what I do. But everybody here has their specialty. If Wadula was to ask me about pipe specifications or Mr E. talked about debits, credits, balance sheets and finance, I would look like this [confused] - just about clueless!

looks like there are a few of you who know quite a bit of stuff on computers. i have a quick question, i recently built my computer and theres this wierd problem where i cant turn my computer off for more then say 5 mins. to get it started, id have to manually clear the cmos by disconnecting the atx power cable and moving a jumper around. then when i restart, i have to reenter the day time etc. since then, ive been leaving my comp on standby. does anyone know whats wrong with it?
I would talk to the manufacturer, they probably didn't know what they were doing. Just kidding. If possible replace the battery, sometimes a low battery will result in invalid BIOS settings.

How about some information on this wireless network system......I don't want to ask a salesman and listen to a bunch I don't understand........question........do you have to get a new laptop or can you use an existing one.......internet service must be "who?"
The wireless networking being discussed here provies wireless access to a home network (802.11b or the newer, faster, not yet standard 802.11g). It works when you are at home (usually a couple hundred feet from the access point). I can whip up some diagrams to show the basics of how this is setup.

This does not provide internet access when you are away from your network. There are several wireless telephone service providers (such as T-Mobile, but I hate them as I hate hell and all Montagues) that offer wireless internet access via thier celular networks. Most of these are GSM based networks, with pretty spotty coverage, and connections speeds aren't that great, similar to dial-up modem.

If you travel frequently, you may find that many hotels and airports offer highspeed, wireless internet access that uses the same equipment as the home networks above (802.11b).

What's are you looking for, wireless home network, or fully mobile celular based service?

Weird.
If you turn it off for just a minute and back on, does it boot up correctly?
What happens if you do a Start Menu-> Restart, does it reboot correctly?
It sounds like it works OK using standby.

You say you have to clear the CMOS to restart it after a power down of 5 min. What (if anything) is displayed on the screen when you try to power it on and this problem occurs, before you reset the CMOS? Do you get any messages or does it just play dead?

If there are CMOS settings for "Action after Power Loss - Reboot, Resume, Power Off"
or "Power Switch- Standby, Power Off, Toggle"
Try monkeying around with them to see if it will act differently.

if i turned it off, then on again, for a minute, it works. if i restart using the start menu it works. if i shut down, leave it alone, then it dosent start up. before i reset the cmos, it powers on, but the screen acts like the computers off. if i disconnect the monitor, it will say something like, not connected to computer, so it still detects the computer there. also, theres no windows start up tone or anything, i just hear the hard drive spin and the fans turn on, thats it. recently, i replaced the flat 3V battery on the motherboard itself, thinking that the battery wasn't storing the saved CMOS data when the computer was off. so far so good, but havnt tried turning it off for a long period of time.

Hmm... Does your bios have settings for APCI? It sounds to me like the computer is powering on to suspended state, from which it is unable to resume. Disable APCI and all power saving options in the BIOS. Also, in Windows set everything to turn off "never" and make sure the allow hibernation is disabled. What system board, video card, and monitor?

I had an old Dell that behaved similarly, turned out if disconnected the CDROM power cable, it came up fine. I can't come up with logical reason for that, and I never took the time to determine if it was the powersupply or the CDROM (in a fit of rage, it became a victim of "Office Space" type beating. We had fun, but we'll never know what the real problem was).

If dissabling the the power stuff doesn't work then, try pull the power cable off devices one at a time and see if that works. Now come to think of it, it may not have had anything to do with the CDROM, it may have been that it just took long enough for me to open the case and pull the power.
