Go Compaq! I have the X1000, uses Microsoft Centrino technology. .
I looked into the X1000 series but those who chose it get it for their "diet" factor. Their performance is far bellow what it should be ... but their are light and are nicely designed. Weight and size is not an issue for me so I go with the best performer.

Actually the Toshiba Satellites are cheap to middle of the road. The Toshiba Tecras start around $1500 and go up to $3500 fully loaded. Take a look at the Tecra M1, it's a beast. I buy all the PC hardware for my company, I have purchased in excess of 30 Tecras over the years. They have a 3 year warranty which makes them great for road warriors.

By the way, some "experts" are predicting that in 5 to 10 years desktops will be dinosaurs. Everyone will use a notebook or tablet PC. Anybody agree?

Well.. desktop PCs are nowadays are starting to look more and more like a combination of a desktop and a laptop as one. Desktops will still be here but they would be made in a way so that they are portable. With newer technology they will be smaller... so the line will slowly blend. [:I]

Oh trust me, performance is almost as good as it gets. Games, Large Software like Corel, Painter, Sonic 2.0, AutoCad, all run at full speed, no lag. I have never once had a problem with performance. The laptop actualy isnt that small, its rather large and heavy due to the large screen. One of the main reasons I got it was because of that screen, like I said before no other laptop has one like it.

*ick* the future of computers... you guys know of N-Gage, that phone thats a gaming system, with games loaded on it, play with others via bluetooth, play mp3's and radio... i was just thinking today of when i might have thought that idea inconceivable when i had a cell phone... about 1997.

i had three Commodore 64's, one Commodore 128, an 8088, some apple piece of shit, 386, numerous 486's and a P1 before the others i listed above.

one of my commodores my dad got me for christmas one year and took it from me a month later to count eggs in his chicken house... was really cool. though it was cooler playing indiana jones.

With the rise of nano technology, i see us (forseeable future) wearing our computer on our writs, or belt, what ever is fationable. It will act as a phone, gps, email, internet, games, music, radio, money, and all the forms of a daytimer ALL on command by voice or a single button!! When we come home, it shows more capabilities imbedded. We plug the computer into a charging cradle and it can connect any video, keyboard, and internet periferal via wireless. It has the ability to replace everything your 4GHz computer and phone/pda/game system plus more, combined. I will stop there to keep this short.

Ultimately, we will have skin patch PC's we throw away every week, eye contacts that can display informational visuals, and voice command everything, no need for a keyboard.

Let me state the 3rd commandment of the Laws of technology and eponymous.

3: Machrone's Law states that The PC you want to buy will ALWAYS be $5,000.

In 1976, a fully loaded Altair or radio shack computer as an easy 5 grand. In 1984, the IBM 5155 intel 8088 at 4.77 MHz was 4,225. 1994, it was the Apple G1 (80 MHz). today, the G5 at 2 gigs.

i think desktops will be around untill laptops are more modular and easier to build on your own. it would be cool if we had the ability to build our own laptops with what you want in it and stil be able to upgrade them like desktops.

Um... the fastest X1000 is 1.7 Ghz and they go for over $2,000. Personally I do not see the point of getting that since I got my new 2.53Ghz 2500 one for $1030 out the door. Performance is amazing. [thumb]
