$10,000 Home Entertainment System- Update

Well now that I have a new house, I need to fill it. I have around 10k for a complete system (if it goes a little over its ok).

So far I am going to do a 70" Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection TV, Sony DVD recorder, Sony VCR, Sony reciver. So you know, I am not buying all Sony just because, I have done tons of research and each item is the best of the market, they just happen to all be made by sony. All cabling will be Monster.

I am doing a 7.1 surround system but I cant decide what brand. I was orignaly going to do a Infinity Alpha system but Polk Audio just came out with a new RTi series and I cant decide between them. Does anyone here have any experence with either set, or have any other suggestions?

Bose has nice systems with awesome sound... looked into those?

How is the quality and daylight picture on those "projector" TVs? Hope its not like those classroom projectors... always liked actual flat-screen TVs better.

coyotefreek,

I have personal experience with Polk speakers. In my last car (2000 VW Jetta), I had a 10 speaker polk system kickin. Subs, mid's, and highs, all throughout the car. I used 2 precision power amps to power the speakers in addition to a crossover.

Simply put... best damn speakers I've ever owned. I could crank them to full volume and the sound would stay crystal clear. Honestly, I got quite spoiled with those speakers. If I do another system, polk is going to be my first consideration again. They just rock man. Good solid well built quality speakers imo.

Happy shopping![:D]

I am not a fan of Polk Audio...they are known to get really scratchy when you pump them up, but epj3 says their studio monitors kick ass.
For a receiver, I wouldn't go with Sony. Look into Marantz, Harman Kardon, Denon, and Yamaha.
For speakers, I highly recommend Klipsch. I think they are really great high-quality speakers. You should also look into Boston Acoustics, and if you have the loot, look into B&W. B&W speakers are so good, they will make you cry, but they can get so expensive, they will make you cry some more.

Denon[thumb] Sony[xx(] Denon with some nice Klipsch speaker can provide top quality performance without going bankrupt, under 5000.00 if you stay reasnoable.. I think I like the horn aspect of Klipsch and the sound it provides. I have never thought that Polk even comes close, especially when cranked up. But I guess look at the price, you can go 2-3k each for high-end Klipsch where Polk is like 800.00 each on the top end I think

I have looked into B&N speakers before and I don’t care much for them. They are also hard to find and most often have to be imported from the UK. I have owned Infinitys in the past and they were sonically amazing. Polk has always done a great job and is very comparable, just not sure who has the edge.

Also, to clarify, 10k is for the whole set up, only 3k is for the speakers.

I have looked at Kilpsch before but have been weary of thier horn type. Unlike Music wich is omni directional, Movies with surround sound might not be best applicpable with horns.

About the Sony receiver, it’s a brand new ES model (not on their website yet) not the old stuff. Their new ES line offers more certifications then the previous models, more wattage, more features in general. Sony has completely revamped its technology so it is very comparable to the Denon. So what made me choose the Sony over the Denon, two things: 1. To mach all the other components and the TV. 2. I can get a huge discount (40% off to be exact). While money may not seem to be much of an issue, I have been having a hard time keeping everything under $10,000 and still be worthy of the cost.

coyotefreek, B&N or B&W?

As for Sony, they have great components and great televisions. I would not hesitate to get a TV and DVD player and other components like that from them. But stay away from Sony when it comes to speakers. Their receivers are solid, but Denon is just a better-performing receiver, and you can find affordable Denon receivers without a problem. Yamaha is also good with receivers for not such a premium price.

Can I also just ask, what is all the hype with wide-screen televisions now? We have a 63" Mitsubishi widescreen HDTV in the basement and I absolutely hate it. Watching normal television, it cuts a lot of the screen down with gray bars on the sides, it is sooo annoying !! Even widescreen DVD's don't fit properly !!! So we use that as our videogame TV (because we don't play videogames that much) and we have a 60" Mitsubishi HDTV (standard aspect ratio) which we use for our home theater, and we just get full-screen DVD's.

I ment B&W (Bowers & Wilkins), sorry for the confusion.

With wide screen displays you can view a wider frame. All movie theaters are wide screen, now that is available for the home market. I have heard complaints about watching regular TV on wide screen displays but Sony offers one of the best "Stretch" modes, you can barley tell everythign is wider. If you dont like that then you can do black bars on the sides. A lot of TVis switching to HDTV wich if the TV is wide screen, it will view in wide screen. As for your Mitsubishi 60" regular HDTV, it will perform great for tv but for videos it may not be the best. I am not sure why it wasnt displaying improperly on your TV. BTW it is extremely hard to find a HDTV that isnt wide screen, unless I am mistaken Mitsubishi makes the only one.

We were originaly going to get a plasma screen but this new house we bought (hopefuly) has all this built in units everywhere and where we plan to put the TV would be a waste of Plasma. I will have pics soon to show you all what I mean. LCD projection (rear, not like a classroom projector) units are much thiner and Sony makes the best models, Panasonic is #2. They make it in a 60" and 70" widescreen, the space I am putting it is very large so the larger the TV, the less empty space around it. I am going to put it on a glass shelf unit which will hold all the AV equipment and the center channel.

This is a pic of the TV, when on the glass unit and in the built in unit you wont be able to tell that it is a projection unit. TV

so what type of drug money is making all this possible? [fake]
Oh, this from the porn king.

anyway
I want to explain the diffrence between a 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 sound systems.

A 5.1 surround system has well 5 speakers and a sub.
A 6.1 surround system adds a rear center channel.
A 7.1 surround system adds not one more but two more speakers, on the sides.

Hope this clarifys the numbers for people. When I need to purchase speakers I need:

1. two front towers
2. two centers
3. four surrounds
4. sub
Grand Total: 8 speakers + sub
