codex, you'll like DirecTV's picture quality. In our media room, we have an HD TV with DirecTV (when we first got DirecTV, there was no HD DirecTV available at all) and the picture quality is so great. Now that HD DirecTV is out, we still don't feel the need to upgrade to HD just because DirecTV's picture quality is very clear and very sharp. Only downside is that you can say bye to watching precious DirecTV whenever there's a thunderstorm. [V]

Damn it! This is a freaking horrible day. DirecTV installer came out, but said he couldn't install it with all the rules my apartment has (no dish on roof or extending beyond my balcony). That means cable only.

Cable costs a freaking ton. DirecTV averages $35/mo for a year's contract. Equivalent cable is $60. [?|] I'm prolly just gonna save money and use rabbit ears on that monster TV.

By the way, what's a good DVD to test out my TV's picture quality? I have a progressive scan DVD player. Bought some $90 monster cable composite cables for it. Lord of the Rings was a lot better looking than Friends Season 6, but I think that's to be expected. LOTR wasn't as impressive as I had hoped though.

Buy a satelite and reciever on ebay, then call them and set it up yourself.

I would go with a sony progressive scan dvd player using component video. You really can't get much better than that without breaking the $500 barrier... What do you have for audio? I personally think audio is a lot more important than video.

Wasn't there a Federal Law that was passed that prevents appartments and condo associations from being able to block the residents from putting up a dish (within reason)?

I remember my old appartment complex would not allow any dishes at all, then some law was passed and if you could put it on your balcony without it extending past, then their was no problem. Otherwise, the building managment would install the dish for you on the roof (for a charge of course).

u mean component cables ?

anyway, gladiator has excellent picture quality and also sound. u should try that.

where u live? ife you live in los angeles or newyork, u can pick up the HD signals with the right rabbit ears directly from the network studios if ur close enough. which is better bc right now directtv/dishnet only offers like discovery and hbo and some otehrs in hd. i think.

I can put it on the balcony, but it can't extend past. Problem is, the way the building is set up, my balcony is blocked. The roof is a sun deck so it's a common area. I asked but my manager said the owner company tried a roof satellite on another building and it caused all sorts of problems cuz some residents would get signal and others wouldn't and they'd have to readjust constantly.

My audio sucks. It's currently the itty bitty speakers at the bottom of the TV.

Hmm, rabbit ears can pick up HD? We were at best buy and we saw those HD rabbit ears. Gonna have to try that. I actually live in Los Angeles. West LA area but not too far from the studios. Cable is just too freaking expensive.

And yeah, I mean component cables. But made by the "Monster Cable" company.
