Fianacial performances before and after Bangle Initiatives

Hello all,

Since I would like to find the objective information of BMWgroup performances
before and after Chris Bangle's design initiatives, I searched financial reports
at the BMWgroup. Indeed, some of you might want true information as much as I did.

Here they are:

1) BMWgroup's sales increase => 0% comparing (2002 and 2003 (1Q, 2Q, 1H))*
2) 5 series sales dropped -18% (2002 and 2003 / 1H)*
3) 7 series sales increased 7% (2002 and 2003 / 1H)*
4) Mini Rover sales increased dramatically 44% (2002 and 2003 / 1H)*

The company ascribed the "0%" sales increase to economic downturns.
However, since our purpose is to find the influece of Bangle Initiatives,
it is better to focus on the above item 2) and 3).

Actually, at 2), the new Bangle style BMW 5 series are not included. Thus,
we can't decide Bangle's influences. However, above number 3),
it included Bangle's new fat 7 series.

Given that the sales increase of old 7 series between 2001 and 2002 was 50.7%,
the 7% increase (including the new 7 series) is too low. The economic downturn
has been salient from year 2000. Thus, we can say that there has been a different
factor other than mere economic downturn regarding new 7 series' sales decrease .

Though, it is too early to set up a deterministic view of Bangle Initiatives,
I would say, there has been inappropriate influences of new BMW design to
markets. And this might be one of the reason that they got a face lift of the
new 7 series.

Happy driving~ [wave]

Interesting article

I thought this was interesting

Luxury car sales rocketing; there must be a war on
By Joshua Dowling, Motoring Editor
May 10 2003

As Baghdad was being bombed last month, Australians treated themselves to a record number of European luxury cars.

It is not the first time international unrest has delivered an unexpected windfall to premium brands. In the three months after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Mercedes-Benz posted a record quarterly result for 2001.

"Quite surprisingly, our order intake kept rising throughout the war," said Mercedes-Benz spokesman Toni Andreevski.

"We have no definitive explanation for it other than at times of global uncertainty, people gravitate to brands they know and trust. We suspect there was a small number of people who saw the situation in Iraq and decided it was time to enjoy life before it was too late and treated themselves to a new car."

As yet another round of record new car sales results were announced this week, Australia's economy is again proving to be immune to international crises.

Lexus Sets All-Time Sales Record
RX 330 Sales Top 10,000 Units For The First Time

September 3, 2003 -- Torrance, CA -- Lexus today reported the best-ever sales month in its history with 26,410 units sold, up 6.3 percent from the previous record set in December 2002 and up 13.5 percent from the same period last year. In addition to record-breaking monthly sales, Lexus calendar-year-to-date sales are up 4.9 percent, to 167,065.

August sales were led by record-breaking luxury utility vehicle sales, which posted an all-time best-ever month of 14,039 units sold, up 80.3 percent. The all-new RX 330 also set an all-time record with August sales of 10,430, up 49.4 percent from 2002. GX 470 posted outstanding sales as well with 2,847 units sold.

"Demand for luxury utility vehicles continues to soar, and Lexus is positioned perfectly to take its share of sales with our three-SUV line-up," commented Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "In fact, the new RX is experiencing its best sales ever lengthening its lead as America's top-selling luxury SUV."

In addition to record-breaking new vehicle sales, Lexus Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales of 3,870 marks a 33.6 percent increase from August 2002. Calendar-year-to-date CPO sales of 27,239 are up 2.4 percent.

YEAH sure and I think it will be much clear after 2003.
I saw the new 5 series today near my house.
It looked like an average Japanese family sedan.
No charisma at all..... [V]

MB extends it's lead, check out link below.

I think it is safe to say that the economy is not a factor. BMW need to get it together and go get more sales. They are out there, just get the right products (what the customer wants) and capture some of this growth.

saw the new 5 in person :(

People that can afford to buy a $100,000+ car are not really affected by the downturn in the economy so the sale of these cars can't really be attrbuted to that...

The 3 and 5 series sales would be much more dependant on the general economic trends since more "average" people buy them.

Speaking of, I saw a new 5-series driving down the street yesterday [:(!] [V]
That think is even uglier in real life than the pictures.

Man, you guys are not true Bimmer fans. If you buy a car based solely on it's looks you should be purchasing other cars and post on another board!![:p]

The only reason I spend my money on a BMW is because no other car handles, rides or feels like a BMW. No other car has the excitement if a BMW. I have a smile on my face everytime I get in my car.

I was talking to a 02' 745i owner today. He said he use to be a MB guy, but MBs just are not as fun to drive. He's right no big car handles like the 745i.

I like the new 5. I saw the car in person and I don't think anyone will have any doubt that it's a Bimmer.

I LIKE OLD CARS!!!! and that is why im not overly concerned with all the bullshit thats going on. i know the newer cars handle better and maybe they are safer too but the amount of money that i would put into it would be rediculous because i wouldnt be able to do it all myself. when i open the hood i like to see an engine, NOT a plastic cover. just my thoughts.
