ok the point is you shouldnt need to go to help to do simple things. no, the new macs have slot load without eject buttons (old ones had eject buttons but only worked to put disc IN) and u must use special or drag to trash to get out. when i want to log out of a server i have to drag the server icon to trash how ***in dumb and retarted is that. ITS CALLED START MENU LOG OFF. HOW THE *** WILL SUM1 FIGURE THAT OUT THEMSELVES. THEY WILL THINK THE EJECT BUTOTN IS BROKEN. AND IN A PC IF THEY CANT LOG OFF THEY WILL FIDLE AROUND WITHTHE MENUS UNTILL THE FINALLY CLICK START(WHICH SHOULDNT TAKE LONG) AND SEE LOG OFF. BUT MACS MUST DRAG SHIT TO TRASH.

in my programming class at school sometimes when executing bad code, infinite loop or something mac crashes--not macs fault. BUT THE DAMN POWER BUTTON DOESNT TURN IT OFF THERE IS NO RESET AND I CANT GET TO SPECIAL BC ITS FROZEN !!!!!!! i have to reach in back and hit the hard switch. this is a ox 9.x. also the 4sec power button reset done work when its frozen.

IN our school teh donated macs all went to the computer labs for the programmihn class, (BC THE LIBRARY ALONG WITH EVERY1 ELSE DIDNT WaNT THEM, they wanted DELLS). i swear to god every 5 min in my programming class. "god damn mac!!!!" or similar.

if wouldnt have to pay thousands to replace it . . . man thered be like a bunch of broken macs outside my programming class window . . . and how tempting -- its upstairs

i didnt say ne1 had trouble turing on a mac but seriosly do they have to make all cute and stuff withtheir special . . . and istn their a triangel button on the keyboard above teh numberpad? that u need to turn it on and reset is hold down ctrl+apple+triangle? i swear ive done that before. . .

BTW have absolutly ZERO experience with X, but seeing 9.x . . . . i figure how much different could it be but maybe it is but i am not going to try. so im sorry if i am not up to date but i will not change how i feel unless sum1 forces me to use MAC OS X and it really is better. did i mention they are ridiculously expensive and un upgradalbe so even if mac os X is wonderful, im not that rich, windows xp is fine for me.

OK here we go with the caps.....

Keyword is IF they need help. Most people don't.

The eject button is on the keyboard for the slot loading drives. So there IS an Eject button.

To log out of a server control click, or if you have a 2 button mouse right click on it and eject it.

To reset a frozen mac: control, apple powerbutton and it restarts. as for the triangly I know what you're talking about. Jeez.. those must be some older macs... probably beige G3s.

Macs aren't cute... I mean look at it this way. If Apple had 95% of the market share would you still say it's cute?

Jesus sorry about your problems. X is MUCH different from 9. Using 9 to program is really not something you should be doing. I thought it would be harder to use X, but X is a true joy. You should really give it a try. Schools are ****nig retarded when it comes to macs. My school ran 9 because of security issues.... WTF are they thinking!?!?! OSX is as secure if not more so than 9, but nooo they're stupid. I feel for you in that respect....

That said to each his own..... XP I used for a while and I didn't enjoy it. Others do, and thats fine with me. I guess just use what you feel comfortable using and enjoy to use on a daily basis.

As for Dells.... wow... I suppsoe they're good for PCs. I mean I have friends at college with dells and they have issues. If you want to get a PC build it or go dell IMO.

my firend bought an apple g3 powerbook for 2k, old model 866 processor. is that the retail? o is he getin ripped of. 15'' wide aspect screen. i saw it and he said the screen was way good, no comparison to dells 15'' ultra sharp. that mac had a shit screen. my old dell 14'' 266 pII had a better screen. didnt pay too much attn to OS X. now that i think of it, my uncle who works for mac showed me his, g3 powerbook prototype quite a few years ago. with a beta version of the new OS. must be OS X. it didnt have a name yet. it was a 1ghz. thats why i was surprised friend bot an 866 for 2k but hes the type of guy who pays to much for everything. hes the guy who payed 500$ for a geforce 2 ultra few years back whos only games he plays is starcrat and text rpg. sso neways, uncles prototype. is OS X the one with white screens and mnus bright, then my uncle must of had that one. I was very impressed. If i get a laptop, i think it wil lbe one wih OS X now that i remember my uncles. but as far as pc's go i think windows is for me bc upgradable and stuff. btw my uncle had a nice screen. firend prolyl bought a shit used 1 or sumehting. idiot. neways NOW that i remember my unces comp with OS X (i think) i belive macs are pretty damn good if u can afford. excpet for os 9.

but only for laptops i will say ok for MAC. since i cant build it. maybe bc i like to build stuff. i have never in my life (im only 17 but still) never in my life have i seen a store bought desktop in my house. my dad and i both liek to build stuff and except for laptops we have built ever desktop owned.

Is it a G4 or a G3? If its a G3 it must have been upgraded, and yeah... and either way he paid too much especially if it was used....

I also like to build things. I build PCs for friends occasionally. I think its pretty fun [:)]

I've been a long time user of both Macs and PCs, and Unix. I like to use Macs, but my occupation is extremely Micro$oft centric, so I use PCs heaviliy for work.

I just got a PowerBook 15" G4 1 Ghz about a month ago for my wife as her main PC, and for me to mess around with when I want to get away from Windoze, and to have a Unix system to play with.

Office X Mac's feature set is better than Office Windows right now, and file exchange is totally transparent. I've moved .DOC, .XLS and .PPT files with no problems at all. I have it on a network at home and the PowerBook's drive is shared to the PC to move files around. Office Pro for Mac comes with Virtual PC so you can run Wndows XP as a task on the Mac.

I can't speak for Mac desktop hardware, but here are my thoughts:

Pros: speed - The 1Ghz system performance is as fast as any of the current PC notebooks. Having just evaluated and purchased Toshiba Tecra A1 and M1 systems for my company, I was able to informally compare performance. Apple's browser, Safari, TOTALLY blows away Internet Explorer. Many pages load almost twice as fast.

No weekly virus issues like Windoze. Since there are fewer Macs out there, they are not a target for virus writers. And since the OS is Unix, it is inherently 100 times more secure now than anything Microsoft will EVER develop.

Neutral: Price is higher, but you get what you pay for. That's why you drive a BMW instead of a Kia, right?

Cons: software availability - Only a few areas that this is really a problem. Games, if that's important to you, it's not to me. The biggest issue I have right now is Quicken. I run Quicken on a Powerbook 3400C and want to upgrade to Quicken 2004. The reports on the net are that it is full of bugs (and the Windows version is also getting slammed too!). On the PC, you can get Microsoft Money, but there is no Mac version, Quicken is the only personal finance package for the Mac. I am thinking about running Money under Virtual PC. Of course, Virtual PC eliminates any other software availability issues as well.

By the way, check out their Educational Discount program. If you or a family member are a college student or employed as a teacher, even part time, you qualify and can save about 10%.
Great information Kirby, thank you!

I have been looking into software and I think I can get everything I need for the Mac so I think I may give Apple a try.

Thanks!

Hahaha, funny shit, Cosmos.

Oh yeah, if it matters at all, Apple computers have really great resale value !! I think it is because as Apple computers get older they don't seem/feel as "uncapable" as older Windows computers.
This is what a number of computer people are saying. I understand that this is caused by a number of Windows errors. Someone said that Windows "ages" because of the large number of errors.

I was thinking the same thing until my last Dell experience. The customer service is sure not what it has been IMO. I also purchased the 3 year next day service package and still no successful action. I did find that Dell holds a business license in Nevada and thus must have a local resident agent. Good thing for me because a civil small claims case is very easy and almost assures that I will get my money back or more capable service. There are 7 cases right now with Dell as far as I can tell they are similar problems.

I have used 3 Dells and have never had problems with the computer itself. Windows is always the culprit, worst being WinME. That's the biggest POS!!!!! WinXP is the best so far, very stable and I have no complaints.

I have thought of getting a Mac for my next PC, mainly coz' of the cool design and the many good reviews about their performance. BUT...knowing that majority of software, games, etc are made for Windows, I don't wanna be left out. And when the majority of people are using Windows, it's no fun being the odd one out, unable to share stuff. Those are my only concern, maybe in a few years things might be different.

I have a Mac tower and an AMD machine sitting right next to each other on my desk. skandalous is right, rather amazing how cross platform the Mac can be.

Cosmo, it's very easy to use both pc and mac at the same time. I have my desktop running right now and I go back and forth between the 2 constantly. Both have things I like. And you can share tons of things between a mac and pc.
That's nice to know! [:)]

Dell makes good hardware.

Ooooops, but Dell doesn't make their computer hardware any more, they buy Intel manufactured OEM motherboards and injection mold a case and put the Dell name on it. The same boards that go into dozens of other nameless computers.

Dell has Award Winning Tech Support.

Ooooops, Dell tech support won awards years ago that they still advertise. Now it just sucks.

My company was a Value Added Reseller (a specialized dealer) for Dell. How come I bought over $100,000 of Dell hardware in year 2000 as a reseller, and it cost me more than if I was Joe Consumer buying one $500 PC on the Internet with a credit card? Guess who doesn't resell Dell anymore?

(Sorry, I have about 27 axes to grind with [hatchet] Dell; I feel better now.)
