I know there are a lot of IT professionals and computer junkies on the board. I thought you might find this interesting. I get MSDN so this should be in the next release, I plan on installing it on a junk system.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Microsoft announced Friday that it will call its next-generation operating system "Windows Vista."

The much-anticipated operating system had formerly been code-named "Longhorn."

Microsoft also unveiled the Windows Vista Web site and said the first beta test version of the system, which will be targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by Aug. 3. The system is scheduled to be released late next year.

Previous Windows releases have been named by year number or by a moniker -- such as Windows XP -- to describe the release itself.

But with Windows Vista, Microsoft wanted the name to focus more on the product, and how it brings clarity to users, said Greg Sullivan, group product manager at Microsoft.

"We each have our own unique view or vista of this digital world. Windows Vista is going to bring more clarity to that," he said.

Microsoft (Research) has promised that the new system will have several improvements, including better security features, more comprehensive search capabilities and a friendlier user interface.

Specific features include a new way to manage files involving the use of virtual folders, which will make storing and finding information easier, Sullivan said.

Several privacy capabilities, such as protected user accounts, have also been built into the new system, he said.

In a Microsoft video of the name announcement, the new system is described as "Clear. Confident. Connected."

Licenses for operating systems and related software still account for the majority of the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant's sales and operating profits.

Instead of coming out with new operating systems all the time, I wish Bill Gates and his company would focus more on making the current ones actually work (i.e. "crash-free").

I would say WinXP is pretty stable and "crash-free". I have used it for 4 years and have not crashed once. The system froze twice though, where I had to push the power button to restart. Other than that, I have been pretty impressed with XP, after my experience with Win98 and my nightmare with WinME!!!

So I don't get it. All they have is a theme for the product? They really don't say anything that will change, whats better, etc. That seems a little stupid to me. The video link on that site is completely pointless too...its just like a commercial with music, nothing else.

I know what you mean though about XP etc. It's just because the software isn't error free. Software that is error free is rediculously expensive, such as the software and computers in Jets and airliners. It'll be a few years before something that good becomes affordable to the general public.

I think microsoft should be providing FREE virus protection. Why the hell should I have to buy $50 antivirus products? I'm not the one who caused security holes in the OS, microsoft is. I think their product should be standalone and should protect itself.

I agree. I'm actually really surprised that Microsoft hasn't entered into the anti-virus software market. Maybe because it would be a conflict of interest!!!

They would just have actions against them again saying they are creating a monoply on anti-virus, by adding it to their windows OS.

No what I'm saying is they should create a way so the holes in windows get 'plugged up' so a virus can't do anything in the first place...so then you wouldn't even NEED antivirus.

but like i said, as nice as that would be, it wouldn't be cost effective. you'd pay a few thousand if not more instead of a few hundred for the os. there are ways to do it, i am sure they could....but it takes a LOT more time, and that costs money. maybe a few years down the road....they are making progress. just look at windows 95/98....huge improvements, and its within budget. technology has to evolve.

So it's okay if you buy a car for $30k but, unless you buy a certain type of wax... your body will rust like CRAZY. But it's only for your car, not other brands that has this problem. You wouldnt be pissed at your car's manufacturer?

I think it would be funny if apple wrote Virus software for windows. [rofl] They could make it part of their iTunes suite...

On a side note, AVG makes some pretty nice, FREE, virus software. Automatic updates and everything.
