Its a VW...nice to look at....nice to sit in....but a pain in the ass to maintain and keep running

My friends 2002 GTI has had 4 coil packs replaced, head lights have malfunctioned 3 times

The dealer has been okay and gives him a rental but for some reason lately the reliablility has gone down....and its simple little problems but having the same thing happen multiple times gets annoying and this is a platform wide problem.....not an isolated case

I would reconsider it before taking the plunge....their are quicker cars to be had for less money

I would consider a used M coupe before purchasing a 28-29K VW.....the M is quicker, nicer and has more potential

but the 540i will still be in the family heh it'll be my dad's here is some info on the Golf

Exterior: The optical appearance of this new, top Golf model is characterized by its sports running gear which - in comparison with the standard model - has been lowered by 20 millimeters, 18" alloy wheels with 225/40 ZR 18 tires and extensive modifications at the front and rear.

Interior: In the passenger compartment, brushed aluminum trim (pedals, center console, gearshift lever, etc.) underlines the dynamic orientation of the most successful car ever built in Germany. The newly-designed front sports seats with integrated headrests and a leather-covered steering wheel exclusive to the R32 have been designed for sporty driving.

Further equipment: The extensive standard equipment fitted in the R32, which will initially be available as a two-door model, includes: Electronically-controlled automatic air conditioner, a high-quality radio system with eight loudspeakers, multi-function display, rain sensor, a rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle setting, heated seats and xenon headlights including a headlight washer system.

Potential: As the new top model in the Golf model series, all of the R32's drive characteristics impressively demonstrate the dynamic potential of this compact class best-seller. However, the R32 also shows what is possible when luxury class technology is transferred to another, smaller vehicle class. Because the combination of such a powerful, naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine with standard four-wheel drive is currently unique in this segment.

The fastest and most powerful stock VW ever to be produced. This vehicle is sure to make another legendary mark for VW. The R32 exhibits the same qualities of it's predecessors: small, maneuverable fun to drive, and obsessive to own.

The V6 engine is still a reduced angle 6 cylinder 24V with 3.2L displacement. Horsepower is 241 and torque is 236 - joined with a 6 speed 4MOTION transmission. Redline is a bit higher then the VR6 at 7000. The whole thing weighs in at 3,256 pounds.

The VW R32 runs the quarter in 14.8, quick off the line but it has an approximate 24% power loss on the drive line compared to it's 2 wheel drive VR6 predecessor. Stock 18" wheels.

The VW R32 is not so hot out of the box for a 3.2L. But, rest assured... like the VR6 before it – R32 has enormous potential. When tuners and fanatics get their hands on this machine it will surely brutalize any rice back to the grass from which it was grown.

[hihi] Case in point most Naturally aspirated fwd 4 cars could outrun it. My car would demolish it.....

14.8 is dog slow.....but I take it you arent after a performance vehicle?

Well I will tell you a car that runs a 14.8 with AWD is slow....Naturally aspirated even slower since it will cost $$$ to go faster.

But if thats what you like hey...more power to you....but dont expect to out run anyone with a half quick car...a WRX, Type R integra, STI, EVO, LS1, LT1, M3, M coupe etc...will be leaving you behind....so maybe blowing the doors off a 16 sec civic will be okay but I wouldnt expect to put anyone in there "place" if you know what I mean.

99-2000 240hp and 258ftlbs of torque--- 13.80's 0-60 high 5's
20001-2002 315hp and 300+ftlbs of torque 13.20's...12 sec capable with traction low 5's border line high 4's

A used 99 goes for 20-25K
A 2001 is significantly more 30K+

If you like hatchbacks the M coupe is THE hatch....I wont even mention the V8 powered versions.....daily driven low 12's with high 11's on street tires a matter of traction

v8 powerd versions??

I thought they only came in straight 6's
[fake] Their are evil guys like me who take great joy in what people think about certain cars....so a Z06 driver (low to mid 12 sec car) doesnt fear a 13 sec car until said car pulls past like a freight train

The V8 swap was conceived a few years ago for guys like me.....but a 2JZ Supra turbo motor swap is in the works.....the block is capable of holding 800whp stock....is an inline 6 and fits nicely and is very light (compared to the V8 swap)

Picture a 500whp 10 sec street driven M coupe [thumb]

I love cars....[hihi]
