So I rented The Italian Job on Thursday night and I liked it so much, I bought it on Friday night when I was returning the rented copy. In the "Special Features" they talk about the original version of The Italian Job and how it is such a great movie. I went to Amazon.com and in most of the customer reviews, people state that the movie contains one of the greatest car chases in the history of movies and the movie itself is really great. Has anybody seen the original version? If so, how is the car chase in that movie, and the movie overall? Is it worth purchasing on DVD?
Btw, if you have not seen the new version of "The Italian Job", obviously I highly recommend it. It is such a lot of fun to watch and it just flows so well...I can easily recommend this movie to anyone, no matter what taste in movies they have. [:)]

I saw the original one, it's been a loooooooong time. I remember it was a great chase scene. One of the reasons (back then) was that the Mini was held in awe by Americans. Americans were driving things like Caddies, Continentals, etc. Other than the VW Bug and the Corvair, about the smallest car in the road was the Mustang. So that movie exposed Americans to a cool LITTLE car.

If I'm not mistaken, they actually drove the Minis in and out of a moving tractor trailer? It doesn't compare to CG stuff made today, like in Matrix Reloaded, but, that's why it was cool, it was 100% real driving.

they were planning on having the new italian job chase scene on the roof of a skyscraper, not sure how it works into the plot but after 9/11 they had to kill that scene

original one had the minis racing on the steps of a church =]

Hmmm...not too many movies have any really great chase scenes in them. The Transporter's intro scene was great, but that was like the only driving he did...after that, his car just gets blown up. This new version of The Italian Job was pretty great...it was so much fun to see red, white, and blue Mini's running around on the sidewalk and then all over town.

Haha, I have both Fast and Furious movies on DVD.

I love the way these cars look !! I cannot believe how good they look with the BBS Wheels, Aero Kit, Rally Lights, and Bonnet Stripes...they actually look like serious performance cars instead of homosexual clown cars for once !!

I have the origional on Dvd. every last bit of action (including the 20ft jump over the roofs of buildigs) was done for real and the cars really did keep going. accross the weir in 2ft of water through the pipeline and out the otherside. the whole idea is absoultly amazing. the film makers actually did bring Turin to a standstill during making and the traffic jam you see is umm well help from the "locals" (locals wearing black suits no less[;)] ) the the mini is a icon for a generation. remember these little things only had 1300cc engines putting out an awsome ~60Bhp and performed all these stunts. The chase goes on for ~30mins and is one of the best iv'e seen. Unlike Bullit it shows that you don't need displacement the size of Central Park to get a good chase scene.

the original "italian job" is a great movie, indeed - but bear in mind when you watch it that it's from 1969, it is a little cheeky at times. the chase scenes are awesome, obviously, and it has one of michael caine's most famous lines in it: "you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"

also, since someone pointed out all the driving is real - that's actually true of the new "italian job" as well - plus, much of the actual driving is done by the cast, there's no CGI (keep that in mind when you see the MINIs going down the stairs and getting onto the subway tracks, and if you see theron behind the wheel - she did the driving).

now "the fast and the furious", quite a different story there. :)

True theres no/little CGI BUT,(theres always one [:D] ) the stunts in the original were for REAL meaning they actually DID hurl an E-Type down the cliffs the Aston was the only one not to get thrown (some problem thats explained on the DvD) the jumps left the Minis still running. In the New Films making of you see that there were loads of Minis and they did the jumps for real but they were too high and wrecked the cars and then they re-did the landing with a new car! i can't remember right now but i think they only had like a handful of cars in the '69 version. And they borrowed stole and begged the cars used (apart from the Fiats and the mafia connection!) then drove the minis, bus, supercars down to italy by themselves!

and in 1970 they invented paragraphs [:D]

Did you guys ever see the making for the M5 film from BMW Films? In one part, they show the M5 actually doing that whole jump (ya know, when Clive Owens rockets the M5 into the air...nice sweet jump), and they actually show it land. The M5 did the jump perfectly, and it landed smoothly !!! No sparks anywhere, looked like no damage...hell, it looked like the car didn't even break a sweat on the landing! I was so impressed by that...that the car did such a big jump and landed so gracefully and "seemed" to be completely unaffected by it !!
