Saw this and wanted to share it.

The photograph attached was taken by the crew on board the Columbia during its last mission, on a cloudless day. The picture is of Europe and Africa when the sun is setting. Half of the picture is in night. The bright dots you see are the cities lights. The top part of Africa is the Sahara Desert. Note that the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona, and that's it's still daylight in Dublin, London, Lisbon, and Madrid. The sun is still shining on the Strait of Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Sea is already in darkness. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see the Azores Islands; below them to the right are the Madeira Islands; a bit below are the Canary Islands; and further South, close to the farthest western point of Africa, are the Cape Verde islands. Note that the Sahara is huge and can be seen clearly both during daytime and night time. To the left, on top, is Greenland, totally frozen.

Are you absolutely sure that is from the Columbia? I heard the news shortly after it happined when I was training in Bavaria. I was right on the border of the Czech Republic and it was still light out. The picture shows pretty much all of Germany dark. Also the remains of the ship were in Texas. I'm not a rocket scientist, but if you were high enough to get a beautiful picture of Europe, would'nt your ship be in outer space far away from Texas?

that really is a cool pic... (gonna be the reverse thinking fool again) but that isnt a "picture" so easily taken from a camera. There is NO freggin way you can see the bottom of the ocean with light. Meaning this has to encorporate some form masking of numerous images. Also, i think a day to night transition is longer than that.

"i think a day to night transition is longer than that." Consider how many miles wide that transition from day to night gray area is; when you're in space, hundreds of miles up the transition from night to day on earth appears very small but is actually hundreds of miles wide. The surprising thing is that the sky is clear over the entire country of England!

nice shot, but the detail looks computer generated. it might just be my computer, but it looks like computer game graphics.
