If I were to buy a truck, it would have to be the next generation Lightning or the SRT. They are just too darn sexy.

Those are very cool trucks. My brother wanted a SRT really bad. Both trucks mentioned above are really fast too. You have to watch those things. They can flat scoot...

There was a video about a BMW M3 vs. a Ford F150 Lighting and the M3 owned it [:D] but then again those are the old stuff, those new SRT Dodge Trucks seem to be nothing but beasts [unsure]

the Lightening is no longer in production, it got scrapped with the body style change. the closest thing you can get to it now is the Rousch F-150, 400hp w/ a blown 5.4l

Ford is coming out with a new Lightning. In the meantime, the SRT-10 is SUCH a champ. It looks great, inside and out, RWD, 500hp and 525 torque, 22" wheels or something massive like that, all for $45K.

The phrase "yank tank" comes to mind..... The concept of the huge american pickup was invented to combat pressure from the govt to kerb the manufacture of high-performance gas-guzzling sports cars during the fuel crisis. I.e. make the same cars, but with pickup bodies and say they are "work" vehicles.

Now they are uneccessary and unwieldly. I have driven plenty of pickups of non-american marques with power to match the american ones, but also with things that american vehicle manufacturers don't seem to understand like handling, cornering, ride comfort and safety considerations for both the occupants AND other road users and pedestrians.

Sure a F150 lightning is a hell of alot of fun, but throw it into a few tight turns and then compare it to any one of a number of other sports pickups that do not have the same bulk and watch the difference. The only benefit of these vehicles is to make some sort of statement as they are not even at the top of the list as far as suitability and capability off road or carrying loads.

Total WOFTAM IMHO.

My $0.02c, maybe, but I think you'll find I am not in the minority in thinking this way.

Flame away!!!

I see your point and I agree with you how these sport pickups do compromise their utilitarian nature, which almost makes their purpose self-defeating. But the thing is, the US is FULL of people who absolutely LOVE pickup trucks (i.e. white trash, etc.), and for around $50K they'd rather ride in an American sport-pickup truck that's fast as balls (assuming they don't need all the utility of a pickup, but instead prefer the look and feel of it) as opposed to an M3, for example.
You have to keep in mind that the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in America, and has been for like 10 or 15 years or so. Based on that kind of demand for pickup trucks, the SRT-10, F-150 Lightning, Chevy SSR pickup, (etc.) are guaranteed to be worthwhile for Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet.

And I wouldn't say that the "huge American pickup" was invented to get around governmental pressure to curb production of high performance cars. Big American pickups have been around forever - as long as the American cars have been around. During the power wars of the 60s and early 70s when American cars were getting huge-ass engines and were amazingly powerful vehicles, the trucks were getting huge-ass engines too.

The government (or at least the EPA) would actually like to curb production of the big ass trucks (namely the stupid huge SUVs) in favor of producing cars. Hence, we get things like the Chrysler PT Cruiser that is classified by the EPA as a light truck in order to help out the company's corporate fuel economy rating.

You're right, what I should have said is what kickstarted their popularity was that the users of pickups didn't suffer in terms of levys as the muscle car owners did,(at least as I understand it - I may have the techncalities slightly wrong) but with similar performance at their fingertips (or toes?)

I understand they have a huge following, I fail to understand why? I guess it is just a mindset that is foreign to me.
