Built tons of PCs in my time but do not currently own one...
That's sweet. I love the new Apples. If my med school hadn't given me the ThinkPad as part of my tuition, I would have gotten a 12" Powerbook. [thumb]

built mine 2.5 years ago for $1490...

XP 1800+ with 256meg DDR Crucial ram (the other half burned up) on an MSI mobo
MSI GF3 graphics and Creative X Gamer sound
0 Stripe RAID 40 gig Maxtor disks, TEAC 16x burner, and some high quality DVD
top of the line 3 Com Nic, 450 W. power, Silverado heat sink, all in a Lian Li case

Back then this thing was the shiz, even more so for the price and quality of each item. I looked up every item and picked out the top rated of its time or if it wasnt, then it was to be better compliant with another top component.

I wont be upgrading for a while seeing as how, its plenty fast for what i do and still plays current games with ease.
The next upgrade i will do is to an AMD 64 bit system with some compatible OS.

Can't remember all the specs so this is the best of my knowledge (on this particular computer):

Dell Dimension XPS
2.8Ghz Pentium 4 with HT
1 Gig Ram
250 Gig HD
DVD-Rom
CD-RW/DVD-RW
Can't remember the video card but it's prolly some 128mb one.

alienware is nothing special. overpriced.
seriously, my friends computer is faster then his recently purchased alienware, but that things a monster. its a dual 2.0ghz (i think) zeon processor with 4 gigs of ram and a terabyte of hardrive space and a 256 quadro effects videocard. it was built to run Maya without any lag and literally spanks most alienware comps out there today(and is about $2000 less then his alienware).

anyways...

Athlon Xp 2500+
1 ghz ram
160 gig harddrive
128 mb Ati Radeon 9000
Creative SB AUdigy LS soundcard
some cheap DVD/CD re-write drive 52x24x52 (i think its a mad dog)
internal zipdrive
Asus A7N8X-E deluxe mobo
Antec Piano black Overture case
samsung SyncMaster 955DF

i think thats everything
