Well, over the Christmas break from classes I went to Pakistan with my family to visit my grandmother who hasn't been keeping well. My brother had bought me a digital camera for Christmas, so I took some pictures and I'm posting them. The Ronald McDonald picture; let me explain: all American establishments in Pakistan had armed security guards, and I asked one of them to take out his gun so I could get a picture (b/c my friends didn't believe me that even at Mcdonald's they have armed gunmen) So my mom told the guard to put the gun to Ronald's head. Truly one of my favorite pictures. Everybody who was standing around started laughing hysterically. Mind you this is at the McDOnald's at the Airport in Karachi.
I'll load more later when I have time.

What part of Bombay / Mumbai? If it's near Churchgate let me know; my Uncle and his family lives in the Raj Mahal building in Churchgate. Mumbai is NOTHING to worry about; it's such an awesome city; you'll feel like you're in New York. My cousins took me out last time I was over there and Bombay's night life is much more vibrant than anything I experienced in MD.

Emirates is a great country; very wealthy. I would recommend Emirates airline if you can choose your airline. We flew Reagan to JFK, JFK to Dubai, Dubai to Karachi--all on Emirates (except the local flight) and it was an awesome experience. Coach felt like 1st class.

Have a safe trip.

Yes thanks for sharing the photos! That MB bus was way cool looking!
It's actually a Mazda--they just change symbols all the time. lol. The rickshaws have BMW badges on them--it's kind of funny. I have some better pictures of buses that I'll post. And just imagine, the inside matches the outside--I kid you not.

Great pics!

The McDonalds one is a classic. [rofl]
Yeah, by far that is my favorite picture. Many people don't find it amusing; most people seemed to be "disturbed" by that image. Whatever, I think it's hysterical

Big Daddy,

I could not find any picture of the interior, but here are some more pictures of buses over there.

Man the chapli kababs in the second pic of your first pic look sooooooo good. Too bad i can't get the same kind here :\. LOL.

Anyways, awesome pics, good memories, recognised a bit of saddar and empress market there.

and this is the best part, fourth pic from the bottom in the first post, i read the yellow sign and burst out laughing. Heres what it says: "World famous homeopathic medical unAty (unity) store"

Hilarious!!

Good stuff Sel, im sure there were a lot of "interesting" things for you to do back there, Karachi actually is a pretty great city, a tad bit on the dangerous side though but not as bad as the media generally makes it out to be =).

If they don’t know the accompanying story I could see them thinking it was a stereotypical psycho from Asia, but with your explanation, its just plain funny.

Yup, Empress Market. My favorite Student's Biryani.....(Drooling).

Are you from Saddar?

Best sign I saw over there: it was spray paint on a wall on the highway (I'll post the picture) "Urinating is strictly forbidden on this, the highway of walls. Please urinate somewhere else."

ANd I saw a bus line called "Al Anus." BAHAHA! I know that's immature, but I was laughing soo hard.

Are you familiar with Zenab Market or Boori Bazaar?

Who would believe Ralph Lauren Polo Shirts 150Rs ($2.50)?

You really trust electronics to put on a BMW from that country?!? Having said that, I did buy a car alarm for there (But it was only 600Rs).

Defence is a REALLY nice area; you know there building a 9th part/segment whatever they call it? Some friends of the family live in a really really nice part of defence and when we were visiting them I saw three BMW x5s!!! in there neighborhood. Who the hell drives an x5 in that freaking traffic!?!?!!!!! Speaking of the traffic, I got sick on the way from the airport because I constantly thought there was going to be an accident. That traffic is disgusting.

Do you speak gujrati?

hehe. i dont buy electronics for my car here from there, i used to buy electronics for my dads car over there (awesome toyota corolla LOLOL) =).

If you think an X5 is bad, what about the dude driving around in the Chevy Avalanche LOL. When that things on the road the whole street has to stop and wait for the monkey to go by.

I dont speak gujrati, just urdu, and ive been losing touch with it as of late...

....

Speaking of airport runs, my mum once had to pick up a cousin of hers from London, who was visiting the city after 20 years. Ofcourse, much had changed in the city in that time, and the cousin was quite impressed with the development of the streets (Shara-e-Faisal road), the new airport and such. However, some things never change. On their way back, they were busy engrossed in a conversation, and out of nowhere, a cow ran across the street and right infront of my mums car (A Daihatsu Charade hatchback. Awesome little car actually it had an 1100 CC Turbo engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox ROFL). My mum slammed the breaks, hit the cow, the cow fell to the ground, got up, looked at her, and ran off to the other side as if nothing happened. It was a hilarious story when we all heard it, but i SO wish i was there in person to witness it.

------------

You can always expect something totally random to happen in that city, but you are right, as of late, the traffic has gotten quite insane, with the lifting of duties on imported cars (any engine above 1600 CC had a 300% duty on the car's value O_O) more and more people have access to cars, while the city is still not developed enough to handle the capacity. You cannot blame the people either because of the state the public transport system is in. (If anyone wants to take a bus, its not gonna slow down for you, the doors are open, the bus will slow down, you gotta jump on, and when you wanna get off, you slap a piece of metal on the side of the bus, it will slow down and you jump off -- i did this once with a bunch of friends for fun, and fell off the bus LOL-- wasnt funny at the time though :p).
