Police: Racing May Have Contributed To 4-Car Pileup

OMAHA, Neb. -- Officers said the incident started near 72nd Street and Ames Avenue at about 10:50 p.m. A car headed east on Ames was driving fast and cutting in and out of lanes, police said. The car apparently cut off a BMW, then both vehicles sped up.Near 63rd Street and Ames, a white Buick Skylark with five people inside was pulling into traffic and was struck by one of the racing cars. Four cars were eventually involved in the pileup.Miguel Enriquez, 18, and Alfredo Salinas, 18, were ejected from the back seat of the Skylark. Another backseat passenger, Juan Hernandez, was pinned. Police said Hernandez and Enriquez are in very critical condition. No arrests have been made so far, and police continue to investigate. Police at first said it is a possible case of road rage, but now believe the two parties may have known each other and decided to street race.

Wow, that looks like an M3. I think it probably was a street race and the kid pulling in the Buick was stupid and thought he could beat the M3 and the other car when trying to make the turn.

First, I first though it was an M3 too, but I looked closer and those are not stock M3 wheels. They look close, but they are not stock M3 wheels.....

Second, they never stated what the other car that was racing/cutting off was. The Buick was only entering ("pulling into traffic) traffic when they basically got T-boned. This was not the fault of the Buick by any means. At least this is what I gather from the report above....

Yeah I saw they look different from stock M3 wheels but for some reason last night when I was looking at it, I thought I saw the big black front spoiler from the M3 smashed up but now I can't see it (bah, too much to drink). In any case, they made the Buick look innocent because the two cars were racing. If the Buick was pulling out of a place, then he has to yield to the traffic. I am guessing the driver saw the two cars coming and estimated the distance to be far enough to make the turn, but did not estimate their speed so when he tried to make the turn, he just got smashed. That's one thing I always try to do when making a turn...I judge distance as well as how fast the car(s) is/are going...you never know if somebody is speeding like a maniac until you take a better look.

True, if the Buick had seen both cars coming. Looks like it happened at night. When cars are traveling at a high rate of speed (especially at night) and you look left, right, left, and by the time you start to pull out onto what looks like a clear line of passage the cars could have been on top of them by then.

I too always look and make sure, but there have been times when the road was very clear, but when I went to make my turn onto the road a car at a high rate of speed come out from what looks like nowhere. That is why street racing is stupid and very dangerous not to mention why the police do all that they can to curb it. Many today feel they have “control” of their car, but don’t stop to think what others might do or how they may react to a fast approaching car. It’s the “me” attitude that gets one and innocent bystanders killed….

Completely true, it's exactly why I try to stick to speed limits. I know the limits of my car, it's other drivers that I'm worried about. If it's a 35mph zone and I'm plowing through at 65mph it's just not fair to the other drivers who are trying to make their turns and stuff like that.
