I have finally realized there is only one bmw i like and that is the 1997 bmw 740i...
I almost had a alpine white 97 740i but my parents found out that it was to high on insurance....I dont belive them....the 97 740i is the best car i have ever driven! its interior looks the best out of any car..I think the nav. on the newer ones makes the inside look less traditional...the out side of the 97 740i is perfect in every way sleek and sexy the black bottom looks great against the Alpine white body...

here is the full story.....

My dad made me a promise that if i agreed to move down here to austin i would get a 97 bmw 7. So i agreed on that and a couple of weeks later we go one night to a bmw dealer because we saw a ad for a 97 bmw 740i..so we went down to the dealer and had them bring it to us because it was in the back..the car was perfect in evey way exept for some hail damage to the hood and a broken cup holder..We went on a test drive with out the sales guy and took it to a empty parking lot. And i got to drive it around, i was in ah over the car is was so nice and easy to drive. the seats where very very comfortable. So we take the car back to the dealer and talk with the sales guy. We agreed to buy it if the cup holder was fixed a new emblem was put on the hood ( old one was chiped) and the hail damage was fixed. So we gave him the check for the down payment. We all where tired so we agreed to finish the paper work the next day. We took the car home and all i did the whole time was sit in the car i felt like i was in a dream i really really loved the car! the next day we get up and get ready to go down to the dealer to finish up the paper work. My mom said she wanted to check on insurance first. they do. then they called me to the liveing room and said sit down. They said that i couldnt have the car because of the insurance cost. i didnt say anything trying to keep from crying. So i went to my room and started to cry. I wached them leave the driveway..it was so sad..i really loved that car..Typing this almost brings tears to my eyes[:(]

The first thing im going to do when i move out is im going to go buy a 97 Alpine white 740i

That sucks. Unfortunately, this is the case where a small number of people (reckless young drivers) make everyone else pay for there mistakes. My guess is that your insurance was probably $2000+ . My daughter just turned 16 and it will be over $850 for a 1987 Volvo 740 with no collision coverage......

Cheer yourself up - go find a really cool late 80's to early 90's BMW convertible and restore it to showroom condition. Somebody here, I forget who, has a really sharp red 325 convertible in their sig. That will turn as many heads, if not more than the 740, and you won't be paying so much insurance. Then when you hit 25 or so, married, kids[eek], your insurance will go down and you can buy a new BMW. Then you will have a classic BMW and a new BMW!!!!!!

Oh man, sorry to hear about that. But don't give up, find an old bimmer, the insurance won't be as bad. Who knows, if your parents pick your car they might pick a brown 1994 Ford Tempo automatic, and I bet you won't want that. So cheer up, I know it'll be hard, but there are other fish in the sea.

bro....your 16 and you want a 740i? A M-class??? I'm 17 and my first car, and still is my car, is a 1987 325is....its awesome....i need to fix a few parts and buy some new stuff, but i believe its a very cool car. You dont need a brand new car to be cool. buy like a WRX or at least something to ease you into driving.....my friend got a brand new lexus is300, and got into an accident about a week after since he didnt know how to handle such a car..... the lesson is, find the RIGHT car, not your dream car...........

maybe that was just a long babble....[thumb]

i would love to have a older bmw but my parents will only have cars that are new or very very little used..They must have full warranty...and they will only buy from a dealer.

they like big suvs and only like the color black.

Well, you can't go against them because they are the ones paying for it. The car I drive now isn't exactly mine because most of the money were my dad's, I can't tell exactly how much because I don't know. I was working my ass off with him (afterjob) and didn't ask for one penny just to save up for the car, and belive me I did help him, he said it himself, he does the same job without me no with a little inconvinience (spelling?) but it takes him at least 2.5 times longer. When we earned 10 grand we went to look for a BMW (not at the dealer, too expensive), we saw only about 4 that were in our price range and bought a 95 325i with 96k miles on it, got a pretty good deal ($7420, if you must know, a few things need to be repaired but it runs pretty good). I can't really say it's mine but my dad does, he says it's like a gift that I helped him get for me. I have put some work into getting the money and I still didn't really have a say into what car "we" bought, except for it beign a BMW. I really appreciate what my dad did and wil certainly repay him much more in the future, he says he wants to do as much as he can to give me a jump start in life and he sure did give me a lot of valuble (spelling?) things (mostly non material) that helped me a lot. I guess it all depends on how much good you do for your parents, of coarse there parents that just hate their children and there are parents that love them no matter what. I think you got luck because your parents want to buy you a car, just like I did and I'm sure not a lot of people will not want to get lucky like that. As you know, you didn't earn a penny for the car so you can't really decide what you get, on the other hand they are getting a car for you not themselfes. If you want to risk it just tell them that the car will be your's not their's. In any way you should be gratefull no matter what they give you. Good Luck. BTW You shoudn't be getting a car without a lisence, as I seen it from what you typed, you don't have one yet (the parking lot drive), so get a lisence, LEARN to drive and then "get" a car, on the other hand it's your life, so do what you want. Sorry if I offended anyone in anyway, I didn't mean to.

Hitman, listen to me dude. You are 16. You have absolutely no reason to want a BMW 740. That car is targeted for like 50 year old guys, it makes no sense to get that car. I am not saying that you're wrong to love it...everybody has their own taste. But to get one at the age of 16? Nobody is going to believe that is your car, even though a used 740i may not cost that much. It just looks way too mature for a 16-year old. When I was 17 and just got my license (NJ requires you to be 17 years old for your license), I had a 1999 ML430. This was actually my dad's car, but I got my license and my parents knew I needed a car, so my dad did what he felt was the smartest move. He handed the ML430 down to me and he got himself a new car. Now since he had the ML430 for like 2 years already, about a year after I had my license, the lease on the ML430 expired. We replaced it with a brand-new 2002 ML500. We still have this ML500 (my brother got his license last year and the car became his), and we enjoy it, but let me offer my opinion. The ML is a good SUV. It is roomy and luxurious, it does good on-road and off-road, but it is not the best. If your parents are looking into the ML320 (V6 engine), try to convince them otherwise. The ML320 is annoyingly slow, but the ML500 really moves !! You also get bigger, more powerful brakes with the ML500 that stop from 60mph to 0mph as short as a BMW 3-series (330i, mind you). And of course to match the bigger engine and bigger brakes, you get stiffer suspension and thicker anti-roll bars, and DVD navigation system along with some other options, come standard. If your parents are looking into the ML320, try to convince them for the ML500, or look into a whole new SUV. There are so many SUV's out there to choose from.
And don't worry about buying a German vehicle or not. I am commenting on you saying "Hey, at least it's German". Don't worry about what brand of vehicle it is or where it comes from...get what suits and satisfies YOU, not us. When I was getting my new car, everybody on this forum wanted me to go with the 330Ci, but I went with the G35 Coupe instead (which is from Infiniti, Japanese company) and I don't regret it for a heartbeat. Sure, people make fun of me or say things about the car, but I absolutely love it and I couldn't be happier. BMW is definitely a GREAT brand and a very premium vehicle, but if it just doesn't suit what you truly desire, don't get it. Sorry for making this so freaking long, but I had to offer my advice on this one.

The prob. is i am a big guy 6.5 and i cant fit into most sport cars. examples mustang firebird and many many more. I need a big car for the legroom and i only like 4 door cars. I like big cars and like the 740's styling. And where a car comes from does matter to me. I joined a mercedes forum and they said the m-class is good on and off road. But they had some probs the first year out. I looked at the ml320 today and really liked them i found one that is a 2000 with the lcd screen and bose it was 28900. My mom said she likes them the best out of everything that i have showed her and would be open to paying that price for one.[:)] To bad they where not open today.

here it is but no pics it has heated seats bose with cd changer power seats lcd screen sun roof......

The ML320 did have some problems the first year they were out. The ML430 (V8-powered version) came out in the second year of production. My father got the ML430 and we had absolutely no problems with it. So naturally, being very satisfied with the ML430 and appreciating the ML500's 2002 face lift, we went ahead and got the new ML500. I looked at the X5 at that time, but it was not as roomy (particularly trunk space) as the ML, and for $50K we would only be able to get the X5 3.0i fully-loaded (whereas with the ML500 for $50,260 we got the 5.0 liter V8 engine).
You should test-drive the ML320 before you pick it up, that's what I did. I was considering the ML320 to save some $$$, but I test-drove it and it was slow as balls. Even when I floored it, it was like it didn't even want to move. But the ML500 is the complete opposite...the accelerator is very sensitive and the engine moves the car with authority...I cannot even imagine what the ML55 AMG is like, and I am sure it is so much faster.

I know they arnt that fast but they do have a ok 0 to 60 time for the amout of power they have. Plus slow is a good thing for me because of the insurance rates we are going to have after my brother had his car crash. I know the joy of having a v8 because i had a 2001 tahoe with the 5.3 in it and that thing could go. but with the chevy the build quality was crap it had creeking noises when you went into the drive way!!. and all that plastic is just ugly. Im looking for something with the looks and quality..and a ok power plant.

what would you take a base chevy saburban / tahoe or a ml320 with everything on it ??

MrElussive, I agree with you about looking at other companies, I actually wanted the IS300 more than a 3 series because it is very close to the performance BMW offers but has Japanese reliability, just like the G35. The only problem is that the IS300 was first made in 2001 and that is too expensive, so I came back to wanting a BMW. To me BMW is good because of all that it offers and the more I drive the 325 the more I love it. BTW It also creeks when I get into the drive way, so, can't tell you anything about that. Except that american cars have terrible built quality, especially the newer models.

Hitman, I would easily rather have the ML320.
andreyiv, the Lexus IS300 is a great sport sedan, but it does not match the bulid quality and luxury of a BMW. The IS300 is not a great choice, but a BMW is a better one (and more expensive).
