Well... I decided to change the oil on my own this time and have a few questions.

Here's what I bought... (Mobile 1 10W-30 Fully Synthetic and a Proline Filter)

Is that filter going to be ok with this oil??? It's all they had. Someone told me with full synthetic I might need a special filter.... but this was the only filter they had in the book for my car.

Also, I've never changed the oil on a bmw before and noticed the filter is quite different. I'm assuming I just open the casing at the front of the engine bay ( i hope this is where the filter goes, lol!) pull out the old one and replace it with the new... right? Is there anything specific I need to pay attention to while I'm in there that I might overlook?

Lastly, I don't know if ya'll can help me with this or not, but I'll ask anyway. Do you know if I can buy a ramp that will fit under my car? The clearance seems to be very minimal and I'm worried that it won't fit. If I can't find a ramp that will fit, I'm going to have to do some major ghetto-rigging to get her up in the air. I've got a hydraulic jack & stands, but the jack won't fit under the car unless I use the stock one to get it started. Ramps would be the easiest, but like I said... I don't know if these would work because of the clearance and tire size maybe?

Good choice on the oil. Any filter will work with synthetic, I choose to use Mahle's but have to mail order them. Are you changing oil on the roadster? There is an oil filter casing near the front of the engine on the left (driver's side) of the car. I believe it takes a 13mm wrench. On the bolt that goes through the filter cap is a crush washer and an o'ring, these come with Mahle filters. There is also a large o'ring that goes around the edge of the oil filter casing cap. Make sure you lube that one with some old oil. There is also a crush washer on the oil pan (17mm) drain plug that needs replacing as well.

The low profile jack is the only real answer. I use to drive my front wheel up on two pieces of 2X4 just so my old floor jack would go under the car. Then I always use two jack stands so the car doesn't fall on m y hard head.

Yes, it's on the Roadster. My filter did come with everything you named too, so that's good news! I've just never seen a filter without it's own casing, that's why I've been so uneasy about it. Sounds simple enough though. Oh, and yeah... I'll be using 2 jack stands as well.[;)]

I am planning on chaning my oil this weekend in my e36 and i was thinking that I would get 4 peices of wood that are about 1" off the ground and that the whole tire can sit on comfortably. Then I'd just angle all the peices of wood and put them all right at the tires and drive the care up onto it. Seems like it would be really stable and easy. Will this work?

I ended up using a five inch cinder block, and drove up onto that. Worked perfect! I think that should work fine for you Pink_Floyd. You might want to go a little thicker on the wood though. Maybe not... I just know I needed more than an inch. I'm going to invest in one of those low profile jacks soon. My car is soooo happy when it gets fresh oil, and one of those will make the job a cake walk.
