Anyone know of any recommended fuel/oil additives?

#1
Well my car has 165,000 miles and it's starting to get cold outside. Also my idle has been rought lately with all the cold starts early in the morning so I was thinking about getting a good oil and or fuel additive as a first resort to the old engine and cold weather. I heard Sea Foam was supposed to be very good for all engines and is good for a multitude of problems but as I started looking around there are so many different products to choose from that I thought I should ask here first. So what products would you guys recommend for an older engine like mine when the weather starts to get kind of harsh.

Also, I will be changing my oil soon and I was wondering if there is any special kind of oil or and special consistancy that will keep my engine from burning off oil. If I drive conservatively it only burns off a very very small ammount, but after drive for a while under heavy acceleration it burns off a lot more [:(]

Thanks for any advice [:)]

oil burning off? i wasn't aware 4 cycle engines really "burned" oil off at a degree worthy of saying "burned off." I keep a 5w30 BMW synthetic oil in my car. as for additives i've never known enough about them to trust them, especaially fuel additives.

just my $0.02

You have to be careful what you blow your money on. I've read that there are a lot of additives that do ABSOLUTELY nothing but then there are some that actually do a lot. I believe the STP brand is the best.

i dont know about oil additives, but the stuff you pour into the gas tank to help clean the injectors is alright.
There is one franchise of oil change places that offers a throttle body and manifold cleanout by a chemical injection under heave throttle, anyone adjise this type of service?
As for oil, i just started using that MaxLife and well, oil is oil and shouldnt make any noticeable difference, but for some reason now, when i go out to start my car, it turns over easier and faster. (again, that could just be in my mind)
Another thing, running your car hard is good for it! if you constantly *****foot the accelerator, take it out on a long highway and let it run a long hard stretch. That can loosen and remove debris.
Oh yes, another additive thing, a few of the bimmer service shops ive been to put in a can of some industrial stuff. you cant get off the store shelves, but were happy to sell me one to use when i tanked up again. Its supposed to be a 30k mile thing.

Thank you all for your quick replies :) xLibelle, I think I am going to order some of the Sea Foam stuff as I have heard such great things about it. And like you said even if the product does nothing sometimes you think it does and you feel better about it... which is fine with me. :)

I would not use an oil additive. If you use a good quality oil there is no need for an additive. My old 84 733i was still running with 254K on her when I last saw her. She never had any oil additives, only Mobil One. For my fuel I use Red Line SI-1 Injector cleaner. I have used this for years and it is a great product. I have stored my roadster since new every winter and the only thing I do for the fuel is fill the tank and add the SI-1. I have never had an injector problem! Great stuff, came recommended to me by a BMW Mechanic.

MyHarley, thanks for the vote of confidence
