Anybody know anything about the internet?

Whenever I try to connect to auburn.edu, I get the error "opperation timed out while attempting to connect..." I can't connect via browser or via email client.

But everyone else seems to be able to connect just fine.

Why would only I not be able to connect? I don't think it's my computer because I've tried from two different computers in my house, and neither work.

I really need to be able to connect to get emails, buy football tickets, do general college student things, etc.

Anybody have any idea why I can't?

Start with a simple test. At a Command Prompt, type in the following:
ping auburn.edu -n 10 -w 5000

You should get a response similar to the following, let us know what you get.

C:\Documents and Settings\Kirby>ping auburn.edu -n 10 -w 5000

I am running a firewall, but I'm pretty sure it's not blocked. I've tried turning the firewall off and then accessing it, but it still didn't work.

The odd thing here is it looks like DNS is working. Can you ping by ip (the 131.x.x.x) and get a response? Could you use a different machine to test? You may want to just advise your ISP of this problem and see if they can figure it out.

also, who is your ISP?

If Comcast has dialup service with your broadband account, perhaps give that a shot.

It sounds like A) They have blocked your IP address from their network or 2) Your firewall is somehow blocking that particular site's IP.

If you are connected directly to the cable modem:

In your command prompt, type: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew this will hopefully acquire a new IP assignment for your computer.

Another option is to power cycle your cable modem, sometimes that will get you a new IP address from your ISP.

find a free html based proxy and connect through that (do a google search for "free proxy" or "anonymous surfing" and you will find something).

BTW Tom - a lot of cable ISP's are now using static IP's, or do not renew IP's for days at a time. My IP (though it is a private ISP) has been the same for about 2 years now, and I know a few people with comcast who have had the same for quite some time.

Try this at a command prompt:
TRACERT auburn.edu

Post the results here.

you may have a IP filtering or routing issue.
Windows Firewall:
Check to see if that IP is blocked

IP filtering:
Don't know how PC techie you are. You can check this in the the network card configuration under TCPIP advanced settings. Look to see if any IP Filters have been setup.

Routing:
Go to a command prompt and type ROUTE PRINT. Post the results here and I can see if your routing is messed up for some reason.

Ok, new problem. I connected the computer directly to the modem, did the ipconfig stuff, and I could connect to the website. Now when I try to go through the router, I can't connect to the internet. It shows that I'm connected, but it isn't, really. Also, my IP address when connected to the modem is completely different from my IP address when connected through the router. I don't know if that has anything to do with anything, it just seems to me that they should be similar, shouldn't they?

When it comes to networks, I really have no idea what I'm doing, so for the situation at hand, consider me not computer techie at all.

It didn't work with the firewall disabled, so I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the firewall. Also, it wouldn't be blocked on both machines since I haven't used the 2nd one to access it before.

When I did tracert earlier (someone else on a different forum suggested it, too), request timed out each time.

Who did the initial configuration on the router? You or Comcast?

Thank you guys so much. It's working again. Wooooooo!!!

Luckily I didn't miss any important e-mails while I couldn't get in. Now, if I could just remember my PIN...

My brother configured the network, btw.

You may need your brother to look into this for you, since he did the configuration on the router. Good Luck.
