i just bought a new digicam, its a Cybershot DSC-T1 5 megapixel.

only problem is that it has no tripod mount and i have a shacky hand. ive never used a 5 megapixel camera and now it picks up everything including minimal shake. any tips on using tiny slim cameras and how to hold them properly?

brace it against something where ever you can.
the main problem in camera shake is pushing the button, so find a way you can have the camera take the shot without you pushing the button, be it rapid fire sequence or the 2 second timer.
also, shorten the exposure time. your pics will come out darker, but you can still fix them with an image program.
if there is a wrist strap hole, get a real long one. put your foot through the loop, and step on the ground or ledge and hold the camera up and taught. that might help a bit.

Also, when you take the picture, slowly/gently squeeze the button until it shoots. Sometimes you unconciously "punch" the button quickly which can cause the blurs.

Just as zooming in magnifies the picture, it also magnifies camera movement, so it will get worse as you increase the zoom magnification.

i love this camera, the internal zoom is suprisingly good and i was actually expecting less since its a portible slim cameras like those casio ones. shortening the exposure time is a good idea and ill try that, if it gets dark i could just adjust the levels on photoshop. where am i going to find a wrist strap that is long enough for me to stand up? [???1]

thanks for the help

theres a problem with the slow shoot technique. it you press the button half way, you activate the cameras auto focus zoom stuff. it works great but at times it could cause a problem. i could always just disable that feature tho

no. any digital still camera can only shoot 60-90 seconds. theoretically you can go longer with more memory, but the quality would suck terribly....i mean really bad. i am lookin at getting a nikon 5700, or a step up to a minolta with a better zoom...around $800. it'll be a grad gift tho, from my aunt.

can you record for as long as you have space? i myself have the dcsp9(4.0MP).
for me, yes, i can record for as long as i have space. i tested the video footage, but was only able to use standard quality do to the stock 32 mb duo card. if i had a pro duo (coming next week from sony i hope), i heard that it records DV quality video, dont know if its true tho. with the card empty, im guessing it records maybe 3-5 mins on standard with the 32 mb. i heard on a 256mb pro duo, it records about 3 mins of high quality video. not bad for a camera the size of a deck of cards.[thumb]

Ehh if he wants an SLR (the kind where you can change the lenses) I would definitely reccomend an SLR camera, theres no substitue for a nice SLR.. and for brand, I would reccomend Canon, since they DO make some of the best (if not the best) digital cameras under $2000.

I'd just like to add to the digital camera discussion for the reference of others who may be interested in buying a digital camera. I have a Canon Powershot A70 and love it. One of my roommates in undergrad had a more expensive Canon Powershot S30 - very nice camera. I took these two pictures with his S30:

I took this picture with my A70 using a tripod:

if you notice in the bottom pic, there always is a bluish/purple orah next to bright white, check out the headlights. something quality-wise you want to avoid.
i have found canon to be a great company, i have the S45, amazing camera!

But, for a $290 3.2 megapixel camera, the Powershot A70 is pretty nice and I am perfectly happy with the pictures it takes.

I had a kodak DX6490 (their top of the line non-slr camera -- the one with 10x optical zoom). 4MP and the images were absolutely amazing -- but it did have slight purpling (due do the lense). I still like mike's A80's quality.l

wow those are great pics, makes me wish i had a tripod mount on my new camera, and a longer distance optical zoom. [:(]

but its ok, im using this new camera for making my own textures for my maya class and getting photo reference for my figure drawing classes. so technically, i dont really need a long distance zoom capabilities.
