Any DSL users out there? Need a little (LAN) feedback...

[headbang] So... We're getting DSL finally at our home, anyone have experience with a "2Wire HomePortal Gateway?" I've ordered this DSL Modem/router/firewall/wap along with my service (offered with Yahoo DSL) and was wondering who else has one. Seems to be a great solution for any kind of home network you want to run... I'm wondering how this might help/hurt my pre-wired (Cat5e) setup?

Any input you guys can offer?

I'm not sure I understand you correctly, but in our house, we have a cable modem. Cable modem is connected to a Linksys Cable/DSL router and all our computers are connected to the Linksys. It includes firewall and all that other crap and has been working out extremely well for us so far.

I have a wireless setup on my LAN as well. You will hardly notice any difference between wireless and Cat5e unless you are uploading.

Yes, wireless is a very good option as well. You don't have to deal with running all those wires throughout your house, which we all know is a pain in the ass.

I have the same every thing as you are getting you will be very pleased with it// and setup is very very easy// and it is very fast// i setup a wireless network for my house so i can use my labtop any place in the house or it can even go 2 houses down[hihi]

Hmmm...

As far as my LAN, which connection is best for optimal performance? Surely I'd be better off (bandwidth-wise) by going through my cat6... [paranoid] By doing so I'm pretty sure I'll need a hub in addition to the HomePortal though, right?

Okay, got another one - and I'm sure some of you have this setup already... [^] I've got a Ps2, and I'm anxious to get online with my EA Sports games (Madden and Live come out this month, baby [:D])- all I need is the ethernet adapter add-on for the Ps2, correct? I ask because I vaguely remember hearing you that have to subscribe to a service (in addition to your ISP) in order to go online with your Ps2... Can anyone shed some light on this one?

The ablility to log onto their servers is probably what costs money (just like xbox i believe.)

Wireless is okay for maybe a few computers and laptops only if you do not plan to move more than a few megabytes between the computers -- wireless is very slow when it comes to larger data transfer. Like most people here, i too have a router.

All you need is the modem (that you are obviously getting), and if you have only 4 or less computers that need internet/network access, go to cicruitcity or bestbuy and buy a linksys or netgear 4 port cable/dsl router.

Its very simple to setup. If you need any help, ask frolf [thumb].

No it actually costs nothing. When you get the setup disk with the adapter, it gives you a list of services(yahoo, earthlink, comcast, etc.). Then you just enter you name and all the stuff that corresponds to your internet service.

Wireless is the way to go. You will need to follow directions for odering the onlune service for PS2. There should be a guide for it somewhere in the game box.

...he wont have dialup becuase he has dsl.

Can't friggin' wait... [}:)] This week I should be up & at 'em with a bigger, better connection from home - means I can actually hit the boards after 4pm! [:D] Thanks for all the advice guys, I think my plan is to go snag a 4 port hub - I had pre-wired my house (four rooms anyway) with Cat6e (the good stuff [;)]), so running my LAN that route is probably my best bet anyway... I guess the cool thing about the upgrade (the HomePortal over the standard DSL modem) is the WAP capability, that is if I ever get a laptop... [:p]

As long as you have an internet connection, PS2 is free for online use, unless the game specifies otherwise. This week I'm getting the beta of Final Fantasy XI : Online to test, so I'm looking forward to that. BTW, I use a D-Link Broadband Router and a 14' Cat6 cable for my PS2. Good luck with the setup. [thumb]

Heh i can remember the exact date (July 3'd 2001) when i got cable internet [rofl] It's an easy date to remember though...talk about wanting to stay home and download stuff instead of going to the 4th of july stuff my town has (i watched it all on tv [hihi] )

As far as what kind of router you should get definitly go with a 100Mbit Cat5e setup. Wireless is OK if you want to check your e-mail and send pictures of your kids to your family but if you really want to use the internet, ESPECIALLY to play online games you have to use wires. In games such as Counter-Strike, UT2003 or other FPS online games you need to have <20 ping and ZERO packetloss and you can never get that with a wireless routher, even a good linksys one. The best thing to do would be to get a wireless router that also has hard switches built in so you can use your desktop PCs on the Cat5 cable and the wireless for the laptops.

I think you should be me an OC48 fiber channel, which can be networked to everyone's house that lives in the north east.

It'll only cost like, 5,000 a month/person
