Our debates frequently get heated and opinions run strong. However, my attempt here is not to create another debate, but to shed some light on a growing problem within the United States, the growing problem of unwanted children, and challenge all of you to take constructive action and do your part to help reduce the number of children without homes.

There are a number or reasons why a child enters the foster care system, and unfortunately, the end result is usually that the child is not wanted by the parents and/or the extended family.

Being largely unwanted, many of these children have problems resulting from drug and alcohol use by their mothers and/or emotional problems as a result of abuse. Few and far between are the children of concerned mothers that receive adequate care and behave in such a manner whereas the fetus is the primary concern.

The foster care system is in crisis, the system is overrun with new cases and under-staffed and under-funded and cannot keep up with the pace of the many unwanted children.

This is where all of you can help and I am willing to assist in any way possible. If you need contact information as you add to your family, I will provide whatever information you need. I can also contact representatives in your state and have them contact you directly if you would like. If you would like me to get you the best contact information for your area, I will only need your city/township and state.

Please ask yourself who is going to do this if you don’t.

Thank you for your time.

I think the big government Washington politicians only think about limiting abortion and contraception. Oh....and preventing lesbians from getting married and adopting is high on these big government politicans' minds too!

The rules need to be changed to allow more diversity and thus more possible homes.

We need to move past where we are now: it's a baby, it's a life, to only neglect their interest and later refer to them as a menace.

Individuals who grew up in foster care are 30% more likely to be substance abusers and 50% more likely to have a history of domestic violence than the overall homeless population. National Coalition for the Homeless, "Breaking the Foster Care - Homelessness Connection," Sept/Oct 1998.

According to a survey by the National Association of Social Workers, 20 percent of children living in runaway shelters come directly from foster care. Children placed in out-of-home care, regardless of the reason, are at higher risk of developing alcohol and drug problems. The survey also found that 80 percent of prisoners in Illinois spent time in foster care as children. Beth Azar, "Foster Care Has Bleak History," APA Monitor, (November, 1995)

Three of 10 of the nation’s homeless are former foster children. A recent study has found that 12-18 months after leaving foster care:
27% of the males and 10% of the females had been incarcerated
33% were receiving public assistance
37% had not finished high school
50% were unemployed
Casey Family Programs National Center for Resource Family Support

80 percent of prison inmates have been through the foster care system. National Association of Social Workers

So a lot of people here can help. It's not that difficult, you settled and secure people can help a lot. [thumb]

bryan, you bring up some really good points. i can't personally support your cause, since i dont' even know if i want to have my own kids.. but who knows how things will be in like 10 years.. keep at it and it's really cool to be passionate about an issue. imo.
